Pakistan's moral dilemma

The primary threat to the prosperity and development of my country is the menace of corruption. According to Transparency International's Corruption Index, Pakistan ranked 140 out of 180 countries in 2021. Corruption is the root cause of many other societal issues. When corruption is widespread, the economy suffers severely. Political instability is a direct result of corruption, and Pakistan is currently grappling with socio-economic and political challenges stemming from unchecked corruption. Many of our problems would disappear if we addressed corruption at its source.

The dire economic condition of Pakistan — where 25% of the population lives below the poverty line, 30% experience inequality, the unemployment rate is 5%, the inflation rate is 13%, and the debt-to-GDP ratio is 81% — can be attributed to corruption, incompetence, and bureaucratic red tape. Unfortunately, our government has not taken adequate steps to combat corruption. Public enterprises and bureaucracy continue to grow rapidly, while the private sector is diminishing. Private businesses face significant obstacles that hinder their smooth operation.

Corruption is also a fundamental cause of political discrepancies. Issues such as sectarianism, extremism, weak rule of law, and lack of accountability are all consequences of dishonesty, deceit, fraud, and misconduct. Feudalism, political party monopolies, and a lack of meritocracy are prevalent in Pakistan. We must eradicate corruption in Pakistan by fostering change from within.

Imran Khan’s government came to power. Its manifesto was to eliminate corruption, but unfortunately, it has disappointed the people of Pakistan. Under his leadership, the country faces new and escalating challenges, resulting in divisions based on ethnicity, religion, and race.

As a leader, I am committed to eradicating corruption in Pakistan. Previous governments and politicians have consistently failed, primarily due to their greed, selfishness, and thirst for power. The danger of corruption can only be addressed when individuals are prevented from pursuing their personal ambitions and prioritize the development and prosperity of the nation. The American Revolution, along with its subsequent success, would not have been possible if the Founding Fathers had been preoccupied with personal desires and ambitions.

Bringing change to the lives of the poorest individuals and ensuring education for every citizen are essential steps toward creating a sustainable society. Educated individuals not only follow the law but also actively participate in nation-building. They refrain from engaging in corrupt practices. When corruption is eliminated from the minds and hearts of the people, a nation is born. This nation will have a strong government and a morally upright population, one that cares about the prosperity of the entire world and promotes values like tolerance, love, reciprocity, empathy, cooperation, and brotherhood.

This vision was echoed by Martin Luther King Jr. when he said, “We need to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”
